People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals supporters recoiled when the organization mentioned it was in talks to do a public service announcement with with former Atlanta Falcon Michael Vick, who is finishing a 23-month sentence for his role in a dogfighting ring. PETA backtracked and instead suggested that Vick get a thorough psychiatric evaluation. As Advertising Age magazine points out: nobody was buying Vick as an animal rights activist, anyway. In a poll published in the May 11 magazine, 82 percent said Vick would never be a credible spokesman against animal cruelty. Some defended Vick’s ability to reach out to the public using his personal experiences, but more shot the idea down — hard. — Atlanta Journal-Constitution
