President Obama picks only 9 upsets in NCAA tournament

President Barack Obama is again playing it safe with his NCAA tournament bracket—he’s picking Kansas over fellow-No. 1 seed Kentucky in the national-title game, while No. 2 seeds Kansas State and Villanova make his Final Four. But we wondered: What would the president’s Final Four look like if he were truly being politically expedient? How about this: Ohio State (a perennial swing state); Syracuse (home to Democratic Rep. Dan Maffei, who could be in for a tough reelection campaign); Missouri (where Mr. Obama narrowly lost in 2008); and Purdue (Indiana is home to the departing Sen. Evan Bayh, whose seat could flip to the GOP in the fall). As for President Obama’s real bracket, this year he chose the higher seed in 23 of the 32 first-round matchups, compared with 27 of 32 last year. He didn’t pick any team seeded worse than 11th to win anything last year, but this year he has 12th-seeded Cornell and No. 13 seeds Siena and Murray State reaching the second round. — Wall Street Journal

Just like the President to talk a big game and then play it safe once its time for action. -TO
