JPMorgan Chase & Co. was sued by ex-New York Mets outfielder Lenny Dykstra, who claims the bank reneged on loan commitments after he bought the California home of former National Hockey League star Wayne Gretzky. Dykstra filed his complaint yesterday in Manhattan federal court, claiming he lost $100 million when he was forced to sell promissory notes he owned because the bank didn’t go through with a promised refinancing. He accuses the New York-based bank of engaging in predatory lending. The bank “created a scenario” in which it “issued a loan designed to fail and in which” the bank “now stands to profit by acquiring the property through plaintiff’s default, rather than by receiving payment on the loan,” according to the complaint. Dykstra filed for bankruptcy protection in July, saying in a court petition that he owed $10 million to $50 million to at least 50 creditors and had less than $50,000 in assets. According to the filing, he owed JPMorgan $12.9 million and Bank of America Corp.’s Countrywide and credit-card units a combined total of $4.2 million. — Bloomberg
