Russian tennis federation head Shamil Tarpischev apologized to Serena Williams and her sister Venus over comments he made about the players. Tarpischev “has reached out to apologize to both myself and my sister,” Serena Williams told reporters today at the season-ending WTA Championships in Singapore after defeating Canada’s Eugenie Bouchard 6-1, 6-1. She said she hasn’t spoken to Tarpischev, who earlier said the comments were taken out of context. The 66-year-old Russian, a member of the International Olympic Committee since 1994, was suspended from any tour involvement for one year and fined the maximum $25,000 by the women’s WTA tour on Oct. 19 after referring to the “Williams brothers” on a Russian talk show earlier this month. Never mess with the Williams sisters.-TO
